Reviewing subduction initiation and the origin of plate tectonics: What do we learn from present-day Earth?

چکیده

The theory of plate tectonics came together in the 1960s, achieving wide acceptance after 1968. Since then it has been most successful framework for investigations Earth’s evolution. Subduction oceanic lithosphere, as engine that drives tectonics, played a key role theory. However, one biggest unanswered questions Earth science is how first subduction was initiated, and hence began. main challenge strong lithosphere could break bend if tectonics-related weakness slab-pull force were both absent. In this work we review state-of-the-art initiation (SI) models with focus on their prerequisites related driving mechanisms. We note plume-lithosphere-interaction mantle-convection do not rely operation existing thus may be capable explaining SI. Re-investigation plate-driving mechanisms reveals mantle drag missing surface plates, triggering subduction. propose composite mechanism, suggesting driven by subducting slabs convection currents mantle. also discuss try to answer following question: Why observed only Earth?

What Do We Learn from Experimental Algorithmics?

Experimental Algorithmics is concerned with the design, implementation , tuning, debugging and performance analysis of computer programs for solving algorithmic problems. It provides methodologies and tools for designing, developing and experimentally analyzing eecient algorithmic codes and aims at integrating and reinforcing traditional theoretical approaches for the design and analysis of alg...

What do we learn from rating metaphors?

What makes some metaphors easier to understand than others? Theoretical accounts of metaphor processing appeal to dimensions like conventionality and aptness to explain variability in metaphor comprehensibility. In a typical experiment, one group of naive participants rates a set of metaphoric sentences along these dimensions, while another is timed reading the same sentences. Then, the ratings...

Molecular approaches to diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis what we know and what we do not know.

Invasive aspergillosis (IA) are a major complication in immunocompromized patients where can be serious and rapidly fatal. Early diagnosis and early appropriate antifungal treatment is important in reducing mortality and morbidity. But despite many efforts to develop detection methods, the diagnosis of IA still remains challenging and current conventional methods are limited for adequate diagno...

Thermal evolution with a hydrating mantle and the initiation of plate tectonics in the early Earth

[1] The net influx of water into the deep mantle by plate tectonics has been poorly constrained because it is difficult to quantify how efficiently subducting slabs are devolatilized on a global scale. The significance of deep water cycle in the Earth history is similarly ambiguous because it depends critically on when plate tectonics started and how it evolved through time. Here I show that, u...

Environmental markets: What do we learn from the lab?

In recent years some of the most influential policies have been either tested or evaluated using experimental methods. Experiments have provided significant insights on the implications of different designs on market outcomes and the lessons learned have helped improve academic debate and the interaction between policy makers and researchers. In this paper we provide an overview of experiments ...
